What are Eased-Edge Boards?

Eased-edge boards (E4E - Eased Four Edges) are the standard hardwood profile with subtly rounded corners on all four edges. This small detail improves the overall look and feel by eliminating sharp edges, making boards more comfortable to walk on and helping deliver a refined finish.

Eased-edge is one of the most common and versatile hardwood profiles because it works well with standard installation methods—including face fastening—and can be used for virtually any application including decking, fencing, siding, stairs, and structural timbers. Installation Notes & Best Practices

For moisture management and wood movement guidance, see the Engineering Toolbox's moisture content reference.

Spacing & Substructure

  • • Use a flat, properly supported substructure
  • • For decking: Joist spacing commonly 16" on center
  • • For fencing: Post spacing typically 6-8 feet
  • • Ensure adequate ventilation beneath horizontal installations

Fasteners

  • • Stainless steel fasteners (304 or 316) are strongly recommended
  • • Pre-drilling required for dense hardwoods to prevent splitting
  • • Face fastening provides maximum hold and easy serviceability
  • • Hidden fasteners also compatible for decking applications

Natural Wood Movement

  • • All hardwood boards expand and contract with seasonal moisture changes
  • • Proper spacing, airflow, and fastening technique are critical
  • • Allow for acclimation before installation (7-14 days minimum)

Cut Ends

  • • Seal cut ends with end-grain sealer to reduce checking
  • • Use carbide-tipped blades for clean cuts on dense hardwoods

Common Questions

What does "eased-edge" or "E4E" mean?

Eased-edge (E4E) means the four edges of the board have been lightly rounded or "eased" during milling. This removes sharp corners, making the boards safer and more comfortable to handle and walk on.

Can I use eased-edge boards for fencing?

Absolutely. Eased-edge boards are commonly used for horizontal and vertical fence applications. The rounded edges provide a finished look and reduce the risk of splinters.

What's the difference between eased-edge and other profiles?

Eased-edge is the standard, most versatile profile. Pregrooved boards have grooves for hidden clips (decking only). Tongue & groove boards interlock for siding, soffit, and covered applications. Shiplap has overlapping edges for siding.

Do eased-edge boards require special installation?

No special techniques required. Standard face-fastening works great. For dense hardwoods, pre-drilling is mandatory to prevent splitting. Follow general hardwood installation best practices.
