Ipe Wood Properties for Installation

Pre-Drilling

Required — always

Workability

Difficult — extremely dense, dulls standard blades quickly

Color

Rich chocolate brown, weathers to silver-gray without UV oil.

Tannin Bleed

Minimal tannin bleed. May discolor adjacent concrete temporarily.

Blade Note

Use premium carbide-tipped blades. Expect to replace or resharpen frequently.

Joist Spacing for Ipe Decking

1x4 / 1x616" on center max
5/4x624" on center max
2x632" on center max
Use Joist Spacing Calculator

Board Spacing for Ipe

Between Boards

3/32" (about the width of a nickel edge)

End Gap (Structures)

1/8" from fixed structures

Airflow Under Joists

18" minimum unobstructed air under joists

How to Acclimate Ipe Before Installation

Allow 7–14 days for Ipe to acclimate to your local climate before installation. Store boards on blocks at least 12" off the ground with proper ventilation between layers. Cover with plywood — never plastic or tarps.

Based on your location, climate, and installation month.

Climate Note

Ipe performs exceptionally in all US climates — from Florida humidity to Minnesota freeze-thaw. Its extreme density prevents moisture absorption that causes cracking in cold climates.

Fasteners for Ipe Decking

  • Fastener type: Stainless steel only (304 or 316 grade). No galvanized.
  • Edge distance: 3/4" minimum from board edges
  • Pre-drilling: Required — always

Ipe Installation Tips

Pre-drill EVERY hole — Ipe will split or break fasteners without it

Use self-drilling stainless steel screws rated for hardwood

Countersink screws slightly below the surface for a flush finish

Seal all fresh end cuts within 24 hours using end-grain sealer

Do not install over concrete slabs or blocks — ever

Use joist tape (e.g., G-Tape) to protect substructure from moisture

Common Ipe Installation Mistakes

Skipping pre-drilling — causes splitting and broken screw heads

Using galvanized fasteners — causes black staining and corrosion

Insufficient acclimation — boards expand/contract unpredictably

No end-grain sealing — leads to checking and end splits

Installing over concrete — traps moisture, causes cupping

Inadequate ventilation — minimum 18" airflow underneath

Ipe Installation FAQ

Common questions about installing Ipe decking.

For 1×4 and 1×6 Ipe boards, maximum joist spacing is 16" on center max. For 5/4×6, you can go up to 24" on center max. For 2×6, up to 32" on center max. Always verify with your local building code.

Required — always. Ipe has a Janka hardness of 3,680 lbf, which makes it essential to pre-drill to prevent splitting and broken fastener heads. Use brad point or Forstner drill bits for the cleanest holes.

Allow 7–14 days for Ipe to acclimate to your local climate. Store on blocks 12" off the ground with proper ventilation. Cover with plywood (NOT tarps or plastic). For a customized estimate, use our Acclimation Calculator.

Stainless steel only (304 or 316 grade). No galvanized. Never use galvanized fasteners with Ipe — they cause black staining and corrosion. For a clean look, use pregrooved Ipe boards with hidden fastener clips.

Leave 3/32" (about the width of a nickel edge) between Ipe boards for ventilation and expansion/contraction. Leave 1/8" from fixed structures from fixed structures like walls or posts.

Ipe decking can last 75+ years outdoors with proper installation and minimal maintenance. It's Class Class A fire rated and naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insects.

Ipe requires more care than softwood or composite due to its density (3,680 lbf Janka). Difficult — extremely dense, dulls standard blades quickly. With the right tools (carbide-tipped blades, stainless steel fasteners) and pre-drilling, both DIYers and contractors install Ipe successfully.
