Working with Garapa: Tips for Builders

Working with the Golden Hardwood

Garapa is highly workable for a tropical hardwood. Its golden color is beautiful but unforgiving when it comes to jobsite contaminants, particularly metal. Cleanliness is paramount during installation.

Recommended Tooling

Garapa (1,650 Janka) is much easier on tooling than denser exotics. High-quality carbide blades are still recommended for longevity and clean cuts, but standard tools will not burn out nearly as fast. Routing and planing generally yield excellent, smooth results.

Cutting & Routing

Cuts easily with standard carbide blades. Because Garapa is lighter in color, burn marks from dull blades or slow feed rates will be very obvious. Ensure blades are sharp and feed rates are consistent.

Pre-Drilling

Pre-drilling is recommended, particularly near the ends of the boards. However, you will find drilling Garapa to be much faster and easier on bits than Ipe or Cumaru.

Fastening

CRITICAL: You must use high-quality 316 stainless steel fasteners. Garapa is highly reactive to iron. Even a single non-stainless screw, or grinding dust from metalwork nearby, will cause severe black staining when it gets wet. Hidden fasteners work very well with Garapa.

Health & Safety

Garapa dust is generally less irritating than Ipe or Tigerwood, but standard woodworking safety applies. Wear a dust mask and safety glasses. Avoid breathing fine sanding dust.

Pro Tips from the Field

  • Keep the jobsite meticulously free of metal shavings. Do not cut metal railing or rebar anywhere near the Garapa deck.
  • If iron stains do occur, they can usually be removed with an oxalic acid wood brightener.
  • Garapa can be prone to water-spotting before it is oiled. Try to keep it covered if rain is expected before the finishing coat is applied.
  • Seal end cuts immediately. The lighter color makes end-checking very visible if it occurs.
