Working with Red Balau: Tips for Builders

Installing the Mahogany Alternative

Red Balau offers a consistent, rich color and excellent workability. It is a dense wood that requires pre-drilling, but its most critical installation factor is managing its natural tannins during the first few months.

Recommended Tooling

With a Janka rating around 2,100, Red Balau is hard but very workable. Carbide-tipped tools are recommended. The wood contains silica, which will dull blades faster than domestic oak or maple, but it is significantly less punishing than Ipe.

Cutting & Routing

Cuts generally clean and smooth. The interlocked grain can occasionally cause tear-out during routing or planing, so ensure bits are sharp and take shallow passes. End-seal all cuts immediately.

Pre-Drilling

Pre-drilling is required. Standard HSS bits are sufficient. Ensure the pilot hole is slightly larger than the screw shank to allow for some movement, as Red Balau has a relatively high shrinkage rate.

Fastening

Use 305 or 316 stainless steel screws. For 1x4 profiles, hidden fasteners work well. For 1x6 profiles, face-screwing is strongly recommended to restrict cupping, given the wood's movement characteristics.

Health & Safety

Red Balau dust is generally less toxic than some South American exotics, but standard dust masks and eye protection should always be worn.

Pro Tips from the Field

  • Tannin Bleed Alert: Red Balau will leach dark red/brown tannins heavily during the first few rains. Do not install it over porous concrete, light-colored siding, or stone without protection.
  • Ensure excellent under-deck ventilation to manage the wood's expansion and contraction.
  • It sands beautifully to a very smooth finish. Start with 60 grit if leveling is needed, finishing with 80 grit before oiling.
  • The small 'pinholes' (resin canals) visible on the surface are natural characteristics of the wood, not insect damage.
