Why Choose Jatoba for Fencing

Jatoba fencing — Brazilian Cherry — gives a fence line real hardwood substance and an unmistakable warm red color. At 2,350 Janka, Jatoba pickets are roughly seven times harder than cedar and more than three times harder than pressure-treated pine, so they resist denting, splitting from impact, and the surface abrasion that makes softwood fences look tired within a few seasons.

Jatoba's color is the reason most homeowners choose it. Fresh pickets run salmon-orange to russet, then deepen into a saturated reddish-brown over the first months of sun exposure — a color that a horizontal-slat or privacy fence shows off across its whole surface. Left untreated it weathers to silver-gray; annual UV oil keeps the red.

The wood resists rot, decay, and insects naturally, so no chemical treatment is needed anywhere along the fence — an advantage around gardens, pools, pets, and children. Expect up to 40+ years of service on pickets and rails with sound detailing.

Because Jatoba is more moisture-responsive than Ipe, keep boards up off the soil, set posts in concrete footings rather than direct burial where possible, and seal cut ends. Detailed that way, a Jatoba fence outlasts three or four cedar fences and looks considerably better doing it.

Fencing Installation Tips for Jatoba

Pre-drill every fastener hole and use stainless steel screws only — Jatoba's extractives will stain around galvanized hardware. Set posts 2.5-3 feet deep in concrete with 6-8 foot spacing, and use three rails on 6-foot fences. Keep the bottom of pickets at least 2 inches above grade, seal all cut ends, and acclimate boards 10-14 days before installation.

Jatoba Fence vs Cedar Fence

Cedar is about seven times softer than Jatoba (350 vs 2,350 Janka) and typically needs replacing in 15-20 years. Jatoba lasts up to 40+ years with no chemical treatment.

Jatoba Fence vs Ipe Fence

Ipe is harder and longer-lived (3,680 Janka, up to 75+ years) at a higher price. Jatoba costs less and delivers a brighter red fence with strong hardwood performance.

Jatoba Fence vs Pressure-Treated Pine

Pressure-treated pine warps, checks, and carries chemical preservatives, with a 10-15 year practical life. Jatoba is chemical-free, stays straighter, and lasts three to four times longer.

Jatoba Fencing FAQ

Yes. At 2,350 Janka with natural rot and insect resistance and a Class A fire rating, Jatoba makes a hard, long-lived fence — up to 40+ years without chemical treatment.

Yes. Brazilian Cherry is the trade name for Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril). It is unrelated to domestic cherry and far harder and more durable outdoors.

Fresh pickets are salmon-red to orange-brown and deepen into a rich reddish-brown with sun exposure. Untreated, the fence will eventually weather to silver-gray; UV oil applied annually holds the red.

Yes, and it is the recommended approach. Concrete footings keep the post out of direct soil contact and give the fence structural stability — important for a species that is durable but less ground-contact tolerant than Ipe.

Jatoba is roughly seven times harder, needs no rot treatment, and lasts two to three times longer. Cedar costs less upfront but is usually replaced at least twice within a Jatoba fence's service life.

None for structural performance. Maintenance is cosmetic only: annual UV-protective oil if you want to keep the red tones, or nothing at all if you are happy with a silver-gray patina.
