About this product

TWP 1500 Series is a professional-grade, low-VOC penetrating oil stain and EPA-registered wood preservative designed to protect high-value exterior wood. It solves the problem of silver-graying, wood rot, and moisture damage on dense species by penetrating the grain rather than forming a surface film. This five-gallon volume is specifically intended for large-scale residential and commercial projects where compliance with strict air quality regulations is required.

Low-VOC formula (<250 g/L) is legally compliant for use in all 50 U.S. states including California.
EPA-registered wood preservative (EPA# 51578-1) effectively prevents structural rot and decay.
Non-film-forming penetrating chemistry prevents the peeling and flaking common on dense exotic hardwoods.
Unique UV-absorbing pigments protect tropical species from sun-induced bleaching and fiber degradation.
Advanced mildewcides inhibit the growth of mold and surface mildew in high-humidity environments.

Best used for

  • 1Ipe and Cumaru Boardwalks: Ideal for large-scale public walkways where bulk quantity and deep penetration are needed to handle heavy foot traffic without peeling.
  • 2Tigerwood Rainscreen Siding: Provides superior UV protection to maintain the vibrant contrast of Tigerwood while stabilizing the wood against cupping.
  • 3Garapa Rooftop Decks: Protects lighter-toned Garapa from intense solar exposure on elevated structures, preventing the wood from bleaching to a dull gray.
  • 4Massaranduba Marine Docks: Utilizes water-repellent properties to minimize checking and splitting in harsh, high-moisture coastal environments.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • On ultra-dense species like Ipe, apply only a single saturating coat and use a dry cloth or brush to wipe away all unabsorbed excess after 15-30 minutes to avoid a tacky finish.
  • Ensure tropical hardwoods are below 20% moisture content; dense boards must be thoroughly dry to allow the oil to penetrate the tight grain structure.
  • Do not attempt a second coat if the first coat has already dried; for dense hardwoods, a second coat should only be applied 'wet-on-wet' within 30-60 minutes if the wood remains absorbent.
  • For new 'mill-glazed' tropical boards, use a wood cleaner or a light 60-80 grit sanding to open the pores before application for maximum stain longevity.

Why Choose Stains & Finishes?

UV protection
Deep penetration
Won't peel or crack
Enhances natural grain

How to Finish Exotic Hardwood Decking

1

Wait for Acclimation

Let freshly installed boards acclimate for 2-4 weeks before applying finish. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium moisture and the pores to open slightly for better oil penetration.

2

Clean and Brighten

Apply a wood cleaner/brightener to remove mill glaze, dirt, and oxidation. Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry for 24-48 hours before oiling.

3

Apply Penetrating Oil

Brush or pad a generous coat of penetrating oil (like Ipe Oil® or UV Plus) along the grain. Let the oil soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess that hasn't been absorbed.

4

Seal All End Cuts

End grain absorbs and releases moisture 10-12× faster than face grain. Seal every cut end with end grain sealer within 24 hours of cutting to prevent checking and splitting.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Dense hardwoods reject film-forming stains and polyurethanes — these will peel within months. Always use a penetrating oil formula designed for tropical species.
