How to Finish Exotic Hardwood Decking
Wait for Acclimation
Let freshly installed boards acclimate for 2-4 weeks before applying finish. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium moisture and the pores to open slightly for better oil penetration.
Clean and Brighten
Apply a wood cleaner/brightener to remove mill glaze, dirt, and oxidation. Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry for 24-48 hours before oiling.
Apply Penetrating Oil
Brush or pad a generous coat of penetrating oil (like Ipe Oil® or UV Plus) along the grain. Let the oil soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess that hasn't been absorbed.
Seal All End Cuts
End grain absorbs and releases moisture 10-12× faster than face grain. Seal every cut end with end grain sealer within 24 hours of cutting to prevent checking and splitting.

Application Considerations
Finish results on tropical hardwood are driven far more by preparation and timing than by which brand of oil you choose.
Seal end grain immediately
End grain gives up moisture many times faster than the board face. Sealing fresh cuts right away is the single most effective step against end checking and splitting.
Let new decking acclimate
Dense hardwood needs time on site before finishing. Oil applied to material that is still moving will not perform the way the label suggests.
Clean and brighten before recoating
A weathered deck needs the gray layer and surface grime removed before oil can penetrate. Skipping prep is why recoats look blotchy.
Apply thin, wipe the excess
Penetrating oil should be absorbed, not built up. Excess left on the surface stays tacky and collects dirt.
Watch temperature and weather
Apply in moderate temperatures out of direct sun, and keep the deck dry through the cure window stated by the product.

Applying a film-forming coating to dense hardwood
Do this instead: Use a penetrating oil; films cannot bond well to oily dense species and will peel.
Skipping end-grain sealer on field cuts
Do this instead: Seal every cut end as it is made, including cuts on already-installed boards.
Recoating over a dirty, weathered surface
Do this instead: Clean and brighten first so the oil can actually penetrate.
Over-applying oil
