Installation Considerations
Tool selection is really a decision about how much of the work you are doing on site versus buying already done.
Predrill sized to the screw, not the hole
The pilot should match the screw shank so the threads still bite. Oversized pilots give up holding power; undersized ones split boards.
Routing grooves is a fallback, not a plan
On-site grooving works, but it is slow and hard to keep consistent across hundreds of boards. Pre-grooved material is usually the better call for hidden fasteners.
Straighten as you fasten
A board straightener holds the bow closed only while it is clamped. Drive the fasteners for that section before releasing it.
Set gaps for your material
Kiln-dried hardwood is typically installed at a wider gap than air-dried stock, which shrinks after installation. Pick the spacer to match what you actually received.
Expect bit wear
Tropical hardwood dulls bits quickly. Keep spare predrill and driver bits on the job so a dull bit never becomes a burned hole or a stripped screw.
