How to Face-Screw Hardwood Decking
Pre-Drill Every Hole
Dense hardwoods (1,500+ Janka) will split without a pilot hole. Use a countersink bit sized for your screw shank — this is non-negotiable for Ipe, Cumaru, and similar species.
Choose Stainless Steel
Carbon steel screws corrode and stain hardwood within months. Always use Type 316 stainless steel — it offers the best corrosion resistance for exotic hardwoods and coastal environments. The slight premium pays for itself in zero staining and no fastener failures.
Drive to Depth — Not Beyond
Set screws flush with the surface or just barely countersunk. Over-driving creates water-collecting craters that accelerate checking around each hole.
Two Screws Per Joist Crossing
Place one screw roughly 1″ from each board edge at every joist. This prevents cupping and ensures the board stays flat over time.

Installation Considerations
Dense tropical hardwood behaves nothing like treated pine when you drive a screw into it. Most fastener failures trace back to skipping one of these steps.
Predrill above roughly 1,500 Janka
Ipe, Cumaru, and Massaranduba are dense enough to split at board ends and to snap fasteners. Predrill the full depth of the screw, not just the top of the board.
Two screws per board per joist
Standard practice on face-screwed decking is two fasteners at each joist crossing, held in from the board edge far enough to avoid splitting out.
Match alloy to exposure
Type 305 stainless is the usual choice for inland decks. Type 316 resists chloride attack and is the correct specification for salt air, pool chemicals, and marine work.
Keep fasteners back from board ends
End grain splits far more readily than the field of the board. Hold fasteners in from the ends and predrill those locations without exception.
Control driving depth
Overdriving crushes wood fibers around the head and creates a water trap. Drive to flush, or to a consistent depth if you are plugging.
Common Mistakes
Skipping predrilling on dense hardwood
Do this instead: Predrill every fastener location. It is faster overall than backing out snapped screws and replacing split boards.
Using coated or galvanized screws near salt water
Do this instead: Specify Type 316 stainless for coastal, dock, and pool decks where chloride exposure is constant.
Using composite deck screws in tropical hardwood
Do this instead: Choose a hardwood-rated stainless screw; composite screws are designed for a much softer material.
Driving screws too deep
Do this instead: Set the driver clutch and drive to flush so water is not held against a crushed fiber pocket.
