Pro tips for dense hardwoods
- Because tropical hardwoods like Ipe are extremely dense, apply only as much stain as the wood can absorb. Always wipe off any excess oil remaining on the surface after 15-20 minutes to prevent a tacky, non-drying film.
- New hardwood should typically be allowed to weather for 3-6 months or be lightly sanded with 60-80 grit sandpaper to open the grain pores before application to ensure maximum penetration.
- Apply using a 'wet-on-wet' technique; if the wood absorbs the first coat quickly, apply a second coat immediately before the first has dried, provided the wood can still accept it.
- Perform a splash test before application: if water beads on the surface, the wood is not ready to be stained; if water absorbs, the wood is ready for TWP 100.
