About this product

Penofin Ultra Premium Red Label is a high-performance penetrating oil finish formulated with sustainably harvested Brazilian Rosewood Oil. It is specifically engineered to protect dense tropical hardwoods from the damaging effects of high-elevation sun, heavy rain, and snow. This non-film-forming stain prevents the cracking and peeling associated with surface coatings, making it the professional choice for maintaining the structural integrity and natural beauty of premium outdoor wood installations.

Formulated with Brazilian Rosewood Oil for deep penetration into dense wood fibers.
Provides 99% UV protection through high-grade transoxide pigments that resist fading.
Contains advanced mildewcides to prevent the growth of mold and 'darkening' of the wood surface.
Non-film-forming formula ensures the finish will not crack, bubble, or peel over time.
Bulk 5-gallon container provides coverage for large-scale professional decking and siding projects.

Best used for

  • 1Protecting Ipe and Cumaru decking on high-traffic boardwalks and residential decks to prevent silvering and UV degradation.
  • 2Finishing Tigerwood or Garapa siding and fencing to highlight distinct grain patterns while resisting moisture intrusion.
  • 3Maintaining Massaranduba or Red Balau rooftop decks where exposure to intense UV and wind requires a deep-penetrating oil.
  • 4Sealing tropical hardwood docks and gazebos in humid or coastal environments where mold and mildew resistance is critical.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • For dense hardwoods like Ipe, apply only one coat. These species have very tight pores, and a second coat may fail to penetrate, resulting in a sticky, tacky surface.
  • Always wipe off all excess oil with a lint-free cloth 20 to 30 minutes after application. If the oil is allowed to sit and puddle, it will not dry properly on dense hardwoods.
  • Clean and brighten the wood using a two-step chemical prep system before staining, even on new wood, to open the pores and ensure maximum oil absorption.
  • Dispose of all oily rags in a water-filled metal container. The natural oils in the stain can cause rags to spontaneously combust if left in a pile.

How to Finish Exotic Hardwood Decking

1

Wait for Acclimation

Let freshly installed boards acclimate for 2-4 weeks before applying finish. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium moisture and the pores to open slightly for better oil penetration.

2

Clean and Brighten

Apply a wood cleaner/brightener to remove mill glaze, dirt, and oxidation. Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry for 24-48 hours before oiling.

3

Apply Penetrating Oil

Brush or pad a generous coat of penetrating oil (like Ipe Oil® or UV Plus) along the grain. Let the oil soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess that hasn't been absorbed.

4

Seal All End Cuts

End grain absorbs and releases moisture 10-12× faster than face grain. Seal every cut end with end grain sealer within 24 hours of cutting to prevent checking and splitting.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Dense hardwoods reject film-forming stains and polyurethanes — these will peel within months. Always use a penetrating oil formula designed for tropical species.
