About this product

Penofin for Hardwood is a specialized penetrating oil finish engineered specifically to nourish and protect dense tropical hardwood species. Formulated with Brazilian Rosewood Oil, it dives deep into tight wood fibers where traditional stains fail, preventing the wood from drying out while providing a breathable barrier against moisture. It is the professional choice for maintaining the natural beauty and structural integrity of high-density exotic timber in demanding outdoor environments.

Utilizes Brazilian Rosewood Oil for deep penetration into high-density wood fibers.
Provides 99% ultraviolet protection to mitigate silvering and sun-induced fiber degradation.
Contains trans-oxide pigments that enhance natural wood grain without creating a surface film that can peel or flake.
Includes high-grade mildewcides to protect against mold and fungal growth in humid or coastal climates.
Transparent matte finish allows the unique character of exotic species to remain visible.

Best used for

  • 1Preserving the rich, deep chocolate tones of Ipe and Massaranduba on high-traffic residential decks and commercial boardwalks.
  • 2Enhancing the variegated golden-brown patterns of Tigerwood and Garapa siding while providing essential UV protection.
  • 3Protecting Cumaru fencing and outdoor structures from moisture-related movement and checking in variable climates.
  • 4Treating rooftop decks and coastal installations where extreme exposure requires a non-filming, breathable finish.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Crucial Application Step: You must wipe the wood surface completely dry with lint-free rags 20 to 30 minutes after application; any oil left on the surface will become tacky and fail to dry properly.
  • Preparation: Always use a wood cleaner and brightener on new tropical hardwoods to remove mill glaze and open the pores before staining for maximum oil absorption.
  • Testing: Perform a splash test with water; if the wood beads water, it is too dense or has too much mill glaze to accept the oil and requires further prep or weathering.
  • Maintenance: Due to the density of Ipe and Cumaru, plan for a maintenance coat every 6 to 12 months on horizontal surfaces to keep the color vibrant.

How to Finish Exotic Hardwood Decking

1

Wait for Acclimation

Let freshly installed boards acclimate for 2-4 weeks before applying finish. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium moisture and the pores to open slightly for better oil penetration.

2

Clean and Brighten

Apply a wood cleaner/brightener to remove mill glaze, dirt, and oxidation. Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry for 24-48 hours before oiling.

3

Apply Penetrating Oil

Brush or pad a generous coat of penetrating oil (like Ipe Oil® or UV Plus) along the grain. Let the oil soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess that hasn't been absorbed.

4

Seal All End Cuts

End grain absorbs and releases moisture 10-12× faster than face grain. Seal every cut end with end grain sealer within 24 hours of cutting to prevent checking and splitting.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Dense hardwoods reject film-forming stains and polyurethanes — these will peel within months. Always use a penetrating oil formula designed for tropical species.
