About this product

Penofin Blue Label is a penetrating oil finish formulated with Brazilian Rosewood Oil to protect wood fibers from deep within rather than forming a surface film. It is engineered to prevent the silvering and drying caused by UV exposure, making it a professional-grade choice for maintaining high-density wood installations. This five-gallon volume is specifically sized for large-scale residential decks, boardwalks, and commercial siding projects.

Formulated with sustainably harvested Brazilian Rosewood Oil for superior wood fiber penetration.
Provides 99% ultraviolet protection through the use of trans-oxide pigments.
Non-film-forming formula prevents the cracking, peeling, and chipping associated with traditional stains.
Contains high-quality mildewcides to protect wood in high-moisture environments.
Covers approximately 175 to 300 square feet per gallon depending on wood porosity.

Best used for

  • 1Preserving the rich, dark tones of Ipe and Massaranduba on large-scale residential decking and boardwalks.
  • 2Highlighting the unique grain patterns and high-contrast 'tiger stripes' of Tigerwood siding and fencing.
  • 3Protecting Garapa and Cumaru rooftop decks where extreme UV exposure and heat require a deep-penetrating oil.
  • 4Maintaining the golden-brown aesthetics of Red Balau in coastal or high-moisture applications.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • When applying to dense hardwoods like Ipe, you must wipe the surface completely dry with a lint-free cloth 20 to 30 minutes after application to prevent a sticky, tacky finish.
  • Do not over-apply; dense tropical species cannot absorb as much oil as softwoods, and excess product left on the surface will not cure properly.
  • Always use a wood cleaner or brightener prior to application, even on new hardwood, to remove mill glaze and open the wood pores for maximum oil absorption.
  • Avoid application in direct, hot sunlight, as the oil may dry on the surface before it has a chance to penetrate the dense hardwood grain.

Enhances natural grain

How to Finish Exotic Hardwood Decking

1

Wait for Acclimation

Let freshly installed boards acclimate for 2-4 weeks before applying finish. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium moisture and the pores to open slightly for better oil penetration.

2

Clean and Brighten

Apply a wood cleaner/brightener to remove mill glaze, dirt, and oxidation. Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry for 24-48 hours before oiling.

3

Apply Penetrating Oil

Brush or pad a generous coat of penetrating oil (like Ipe Oil® or UV Plus) along the grain. Let the oil soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess that hasn't been absorbed.

4

Seal All End Cuts

End grain absorbs and releases moisture 10-12× faster than face grain. Seal every cut end with end grain sealer within 24 hours of cutting to prevent checking and splitting.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Dense hardwoods reject film-forming stains and polyurethanes — these will peel within months. Always use a penetrating oil formula designed for tropical species.
