About this product

Messmer's UV Plus for Hardwoods is a premium penetrating oil finish specifically engineered to protect and enhance the natural beauty of dense exotic wood species. It solves the common issue of rapid UV-induced graying and wood dehydration by using high-quality trans-oxide pigments and resins that penetrate deep into tight-grained hardwoods. This quart-sized container is ideal for smaller projects, detail work on railings, or periodic maintenance of tropical hardwood outdoor furniture.

Formulated specifically for high-density tropical hardwoods like Ipe, Cumaru, and Tigerwood.
Contains high-quality trans-oxide pigments to provide maximum UV resistance and color retention.
Penetrating oil formula prevents the surface filming, peeling, or cracking common with cheaper stains.
Integrated mildewcides inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the wood surface.
High solids content provides superior coverage and protection in a single-coat application.

Best used for

  • 1Maintaining the rich golden-brown hues of Ipe or Garapa decking boards on residential rooftop decks.
  • 2Protecting Tigerwood siding to highlight the characteristic dark 'tiger stripes' while preventing UV silvering.
  • 3Refinishing Massaranduba or Red Balau boardwalks and docks where a durable, non-slip penetrating finish is required.
  • 4Detailing tropical hardwood deck railings, posts, and outdoor furniture that require high-performance protection in a smaller volume.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Because tropical hardwoods are extremely dense, you must wipe off all excess oil 20 to 30 minutes after application to prevent a tacky, sticky surface.
  • Always clean and brighten the wood first, even if it is new, to open the grain and ensure the oil can penetrate as deeply as possible.
  • Avoid applying in direct sunlight or on hot wood surfaces to prevent the oil from drying too quickly before it can be properly absorbed.
  • Perform a splash test before application; if water beads on the surface, the wood is not ready to accept a new coat of oil.

How to Finish Exotic Hardwood Decking

1

Wait for Acclimation

Let freshly installed boards acclimate for 2-4 weeks before applying finish. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium moisture and the pores to open slightly for better oil penetration.

2

Clean and Brighten

Apply a wood cleaner/brightener to remove mill glaze, dirt, and oxidation. Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry for 24-48 hours before oiling.

3

Apply Penetrating Oil

Brush or pad a generous coat of penetrating oil (like Ipe Oil® or UV Plus) along the grain. Let the oil soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess that hasn't been absorbed.

4

Seal All End Cuts

End grain absorbs and releases moisture 10-12× faster than face grain. Seal every cut end with end grain sealer within 24 hours of cutting to prevent checking and splitting.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Dense hardwoods reject film-forming stains and polyurethanes — these will peel within months. Always use a penetrating oil formula designed for tropical species.
