About this product
Messmer's UV Plus for Hardwood Decks is a professional-grade penetrating oil finish specifically engineered for the low-porosity fibers of dense tropical hardwoods. It solves the common issue of finish failure on exotic species by penetrating deep into the wood rather than forming a surface film, effectively preventing the silvering, cracking, and warping caused by harsh UV exposure. This product is intended for contractors and homeowners seeking to maintain the rich, natural color and structural integrity of premium outdoor hardwood installations.

Best used for
- 1Residential Ipe or Cumaru decking where maintaining the 'new wood' look and preventing UV silvering is a priority.
- 2Architectural Garapa or Tigerwood siding and rainscreen systems that require a deep-penetrating finish to resist moisture intrusion.
- 3Commercial Massaranduba or Red Balau boardwalks and public docks subject to high foot traffic and intense sun exposure.
- 4Hardwood fencing and rooftop deck tiles where a breathable, non-peeling finish simplifies long-term maintenance cycles.
Pro tips for dense hardwoods
- Always wipe off excess oil that has not absorbed within 30 to 60 minutes of application; dense hardwoods can only take in a limited amount of oil, and excess left on the surface will result in sticky, shiny spots.
- Ensure the wood is thoroughly dry (moisture content below 12%) before application; if the wood has been cleaned or rained on, wait at least 48 hours in dry weather before staining.
- For new hardwood installations, allow the wood to weather for 6 to 8 weeks or use a wood cleaner/brightener kit to open the pores before applying the finish to ensure maximum penetration.
- Properly dispose of all oil-soaked rags by placing them in a water-filled metal container immediately after use to prevent spontaneous combustion.

Why Choose Stains & Finishes?
How to Finish Exotic Hardwood Decking
Wait for Acclimation
Let freshly installed boards acclimate for 2-4 weeks before applying finish. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium moisture and the pores to open slightly for better oil penetration.
Clean and Brighten
Apply a wood cleaner/brightener to remove mill glaze, dirt, and oxidation. Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry for 24-48 hours before oiling.
Apply Penetrating Oil
Brush or pad a generous coat of penetrating oil (like Ipe Oil® or UV Plus) along the grain. Let the oil soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess that hasn't been absorbed.
Seal All End Cuts
End grain absorbs and releases moisture 10-12× faster than face grain. Seal every cut end with end grain sealer within 24 hours of cutting to prevent checking and splitting.
Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists
Dense hardwoods reject film-forming stains and polyurethanes — these will peel within months. Always use a penetrating oil formula designed for tropical species.
