Best used for
- 1UV protection and color maintenance for Ipe and Cumaru rooftop decks subjected to intense sun exposure.
- 2Moisture sealing for Garapa and Tigerwood rainscreen siding to prevent checking and maintain board stability.
- 3Refinishing weathered Massaranduba or Red Balau boardwalks to restore original wood tones.
- 4Protective finishing for dense hardwood fencing and privacy screens in coastal or high-humidity environments.
Pro tips for dense hardwoods
- On dense species like Ipe or Cumaru, apply a very thin coat and use a clean rag to wipe off all unabsorbed excess oil after 20-30 minutes to prevent a tacky, sticky surface.
- Do not apply if rain is expected within 24-48 hours, as moisture before the oil has cured can cause spotting or uneven finish.
- Ensure wood moisture content is below 12% before application; dense hardwoods require a low moisture level to allow for any oil penetration into the tight grain.
- If the wood has been weathered, use a wood cleaner and brightener prior to staining to ensure the pigments can bond effectively with the wood fibers.

Why Choose Stains & Finishes?
How to Finish Exotic Hardwood Decking
Wait for Acclimation
Let freshly installed boards acclimate for 2-4 weeks before applying finish. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium moisture and the pores to open slightly for better oil penetration.
Clean and Brighten
Apply a wood cleaner/brightener to remove mill glaze, dirt, and oxidation. Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry for 24-48 hours before oiling.
Apply Penetrating Oil
Brush or pad a generous coat of penetrating oil (like Ipe Oil® or UV Plus) along the grain. Let the oil soak in for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess that hasn't been absorbed.
Seal All End Cuts
End grain absorbs and releases moisture 10-12× faster than face grain. Seal every cut end with end grain sealer within 24 hours of cutting to prevent checking and splitting.
Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists
Dense hardwoods reject film-forming stains and polyurethanes — these will peel within months. Always use a penetrating oil formula designed for tropical species.
