About this product

The DeckWise ThermoPlug™ Smooth – Pine is a 350-count set of thermally modified wood plugs designed to conceal face-screws in decking and cladding. These plugs utilize a high-heat treatment process to enhance dimensional stability and rot resistance, making them more durable than standard softwood alternatives. They provide a flush, fastener-free finish for builders and homeowners seeking a clean aesthetic on exterior wood surfaces.

Manufactured from 100% thermally modified pine for increased resistance to moisture and decay.
Smooth-walled, non-tapered design ensures a tight friction fit within precision-drilled holes.
Specifically engineered for compatibility with the DeckWise Drill & Drive counterbore system.
Available in a 350-count pack, providing enough coverage for approximately 100 square feet of decking based on standard fastening patterns.

Best used for

  • 1Aesthetic Contrasting: Creating a decorative 'nautical' look by using lighter Pine plugs against dark tropical hardwoods like Ipe or Massaranduba.
  • 2Thermally Modified Siding: Providing a perfect material match for concealing fasteners in thermally modified pine cladding and fencing projects.
  • 3Stained Finishes: Utilizing Pine plugs on Garapa or Tigerwood surfaces where the plugs will be stained to match the board color for a uniform appearance.
  • 4Perimeter Boarding: Hiding necessary face-screws on the picture-frame borders of Ipe or Cumaru rooftop decks.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • When installing in dense hardwoods like Ipe or Cumaru, align the grain of the Pine plug with the grain of the board to minimize the visual footprint of the fastener hole.
  • Use a high-quality exterior waterproof wood glue; apply a small amount to the side of the plug rather than the bottom of the hole to prevent air pressure from pushing the plug back out.
  • Because Pine is significantly softer than tropical hardwoods, use a sharp 80-grit sandpaper and a sanding block to level the plug without gouging or 'scalloping' the surrounding hardwood surface.
  • Seal the plugs immediately after sanding with a UV-inhibiting hardwood oil to prevent the Pine from absorbing excess moisture compared to the denser decking.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
