About this product

ThermoPlug™ Smooth Pine plugs are engineered for concealing face-fastened screws in decking and siding applications where a clean, screw-free aesthetic is required. These plugs are crafted from thermally modified pine to ensure extreme dimensional stability, preventing the common issues of shrinking or popping out of the board over time. They are specifically designed for use with the DeckWise® Drill & Drive™ system to provide a professional, flush-mount finish on residential and commercial projects.

Made from thermally modified wood for superior resistance to rot, decay, and moisture-related movement.
Features a smooth, slightly tapered design for easy insertion and a snug, friction-fit seal at the board surface.
Compatible with the DeckWise® Drill & Drive™ 3/8-inch drill bit for perfectly sized holes.
Bulk 1750-count pack provides enough coverage for approximately 500 to 600 square feet of decking depending on joist spacing.

Best used for

  • 1Contrasting accents on Ipe or Cumaru: Use these lighter Pine plugs to create a decorative nautical-style 'dot' pattern on deck stairs, borders, or picture-frame transitions.
  • 2Matching light-colored hardwoods: Ideal for concealing fasteners in Garapa or Yellow Balau decking, especially when the wood is intended to weather to a natural silver-grey.
  • 3Rooftop deck installations: The thermal modification process ensures the plugs stay seated despite the extreme heat and UV exposure typical of Ipe rooftop sleeper systems.
  • 4Vertical hardwood cladding: Perfect for hiding stainless steel screws in Garapa or Tigerwood siding and fencing for a seamless, architectural appearance.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • When installing in dense tropical hardwoods like Ipe or Massaranduba, always use the dedicated 3/8-inch Drill & Drive bit to ensure the hole depth and diameter allow for a flush fit without splitting the plug.
  • Apply a small drop of waterproof exterior wood glue to the side of the plug before insertion to lock it in place and create a moisture-proof seal.
  • Align the grain of the Pine plug with the grain direction of your hardwood board to make the plug less visible once the final finish or oil is applied.
  • Use a sharp flush-cut saw or a chisel to remove the excess plug height before sanding; this prevents 'burning' the dense hardwood surface during the sanding process.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
