About this product

The ThermoPlug™ Smooth in Ash is a 350-count kit of thermally modified hardwood plugs designed to conceal face-screwed fasteners in decking and siding. These plugs solve the aesthetic problem of visible screw heads by providing a flush, face-grain finish that matches the durability and appearance of thermally modified timber. They are ideal for contractors and homeowners seeking a high-end, fastener-free look for premium wood installations.

Manufactured from genuine Thermally Modified Ash to ensure consistent expansion and contraction rates with matching boards.
Smooth-sided, tapered design allows for a precision friction fit into 3/8 inch countersink holes.
Face-grain orientation provides a superior aesthetic match compared to standard end-grain plugs, making the fastener nearly invisible.
Specifically designed for compatibility with the DeckWise Drill & Drive™ system or standard 3/8 inch wood countersinks.

Best used for

  • 1Concealing face-screws on the first and last boards of an Ipe or Cumaru deck where hidden fasteners cannot be used.
  • 2Installing Thermally Modified Ash rainscreen siding to create a seamless, fastener-free facade on residential or commercial buildings.
  • 3Creating decorative contrast or 'bung' details on tropical hardwood stairs, handrails, and benches.
  • 4Securing perimeter boards and breaker boards on high-traffic boardwalks to ensure a smooth, trip-free surface.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Always align the grain of the plug with the grain of the decking board before tapping it in to ensure the best visual camouflage.
  • Apply a small drop of exterior-grade waterproof wood glue to the side of the plug; avoid filling the hole with glue, which can prevent the plug from seating fully due to hydraulic pressure.
  • Use a sharp chisel or a flush-cut saw to remove the excess plug material after the glue has dried, then sand the area with 80-grit sandpaper before applying a UV-finishing oil.
  • Ensure the countersink depth is consistent; the plug should sit slightly proud of the surface before being trimmed and sanded flush.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
