About this product

The ThermoPlug™ Smooth Ash kit is a professional-grade fastener concealment solution consisting of 1,050 thermally modified ash wood plugs. These tapered plugs are designed to fill countersunk screw holes in decking and siding, providing a flush, clean finish that protects fasteners from the elements. It is specifically engineered for contractors and homeowners who require the enhanced stability and rot resistance provided by the thermal modification process.

Manufactured from 100% thermally modified ash for superior dimensional stability and decay resistance.
Features a tapered design that ensures a tight, wedge-like friction fit within countersunk holes.
Large 1050-count quantity provides sufficient coverage for approximately 350 square feet of decking based on standard fastener spacing.
Smooth-sided finish allows for easy insertion and a seamless appearance once sanded flush with the wood surface.

Best used for

  • 1Concealing face-driven screws on thermally modified wood siding projects to maintain a uniform aesthetic and moisture barrier.
  • 2Finishing stair treads and handrails on Ipe or Cumaru decks where a smooth, fastener-free surface is required for comfort and safety.
  • 3Providing a decorative contrast or a matched finish on high-end hardwood boardwalks and rooftop deck installations.
  • 4Repairing existing hardwood decks where fasteners have been deep-set and require plugging to prevent water pooling in the screw holes.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Always align the wood grain of the plug with the grain of the deck board before tapping it in to ensure the most discreet visual result.
  • Use a high-quality exterior waterproof wood glue to secure the plugs; apply a small drop to the side of the plug rather than filling the hole to prevent hydraulic back-pressure.
  • When working with dense hardwoods like Massaranduba or Ipe, use a flush-cut saw to remove the excess plug height before final sanding to avoid scorching the surrounding wood.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
