Best used for

  • 1Used for creating a decorative visual contrast when installed as plugs in dark tropical hardwoods like Ipe or Cumaru for borders and perimeter boards.
  • 2Providing a secure, plugged fastening system for thermally modified cladding and siding projects on residential or commercial exteriors.
  • 3Finishing hardwood boardwalks or rooftop decks where face-screwing is required but a high-end, flush-plugged appearance is desired.
  • 4Securing stair treads and risers in tropical hardwood deck builds where hidden fasteners are mechanically unsuitable.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • When using these pine plugs with dense hardwoods like Tigerwood or Garapa, ensure the grain of the plug is aligned with the grain of the board to minimize the appearance of the plug.
  • Always apply a small amount of waterproof exterior wood glue to the side of the plug before insertion to ensure a permanent bond that will not pop out during wood expansion cycles.
  • Wipe away excess glue immediately and sand the plug flush with the board surface before applying a UV-protective oil finish like Ipe Oil.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
