About this product

The DeckWise Smooth Hardwood Tigerwood Plugs are precision-cut wood inserts designed to conceal face-fastened screws in Tigerwood (Goncalo Alves) lumber. By matching the specific density and grain patterns of tropical hardwood, these plugs create a seamless, fastener-free aesthetic for high-end exterior projects. They are essential for achieving a professional finish on starter boards, stairs, and vertical cladding where hidden fasteners cannot be utilized.

Made from genuine kiln-dried Tigerwood (Goncalo Alves) for natural color and grain matching.
Features a 1-degree taper designed to provide a tight, wedge-action fit in standard countersink holes.
Specifically sized for 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) diameter countersink bores.
350-count pack provides coverage for approximately 100 square feet of standard decking.
Compatible with the DeckWise Drill & Driveβ„’ system for consistent depth and alignment.

Best used for

  • 1Concealing face-screws on Tigerwood starter and finisher boards where hidden fastener clips cannot be installed.
  • 2Achieving a seamless finish on Tigerwood stair treads and risers to prevent visible hardware in high-traffic areas.
  • 3Filling countersunk holes in Tigerwood vertical siding and rainscreen cladding for a clean, architectural look.
  • 4Hiding fasteners on top rails and post caps in Tigerwood railing systems for a smooth, splinter-free surface.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Always align the wood grain of the plug with the grain of the deck board before tapping it in to make the plug virtually invisible.
  • Apply a small drop of waterproof wood glue, such as Gorilla Glue, into the countersink hole to prevent plugs from popping due to seasonal expansion.
  • Wait for the glue to fully cure before using a flush-trim pull saw or sharp chisel to remove the excess plug material; this prevents tearing the dense hardwood fibers.
  • After trimming, sand the plug flush with 80-grit paper followed by 120-grit, then immediately apply a UV-inhibiting hardwood oil to match the surrounding board.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8β€³ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4β€³ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
