Best used for

  • 1Concealing face-fasteners on the perimeter boards and stairs of Teak or Garapa decks where hidden fasteners cannot be used.
  • 2Plugging screw holes in vertical Teak siding or rainscreen installations to create a fastener-free architectural aesthetic.
  • 3Finishing high-exposure marine applications such as Teak docks or boardwalks where hardware protection is critical.
  • 4Providing decorative contrast when used as accent plugs in darker tropical hardwoods like Ipe or Massaranduba.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Always align the wood grain of the Teak plug with the grain direction of the decking board to ensure the fastener becomes nearly invisible after finishing.
  • Use a high-quality exterior-grade waterproof wood glue to secure the plug, and allow it to dry completely before sanding flush to avoid 'ghosting' rings.
  • When working with dense hardwoods, use a sharp 3/8-inch Forstner-style bit or the DeckWise Drill & Drive tool to prevent wood scorching and ensuring a clean-walled hole.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
