About this product
The DeckWise Smooth Hardwood Plug in Red Balau is a tapered wood fastener designed to conceal face-screws in tropical hardwood decking and siding. These 3/8-inch plugs provide a flush, nearly invisible finish by filling countersunk holes with matching natural timber. They are specifically engineered for professional contractors and homeowners installing large-scale Red Balau (Batu) projects requiring a seamless architectural appearance.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods
- Always align the wood grain of the plug with the grain of the deck board before tapping it in to achieve the most discrete visual finish.
- Use a sharp, high-speed steel countersink bit to ensure clean, crisp edges in dense Red Balau, which prevents the 'fuzzy' appearance around the plug hole.
- Allow the waterproof adhesive (such as Gorilla Glue) to cure for a full 24 hours before flush-cutting or sanding the plugs to prevent them from shifting or 'popping'.
- Use a random orbit sander with 80-120 grit sandpaper for a perfectly flush finish that is ready for Ipe Oil or similar penetrative hardwood finishes.

Why Choose Plugs & Plug Kits?
How to Plug a Hardwood Deck
Countersink the Screw
Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.
Apply Exterior Adhesive
Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.
Seat the Plug
Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.
Flush-Cut After Curing
Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.
Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists
Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
