About this product
DeckWise Red Balau Smooth Hardwood Plugs are precision-tapered inserts designed to conceal face-driven screws in tropical hardwood installations. These plugs provide a seamless, professional finish by filling countersunk holes with the same wood species as the decking, ensuring the fasteners remain hidden and protected from moisture. This 1050-count bulk pack is specifically tailored for large-scale residential or commercial projects where aesthetic continuity is a priority.

- 4Securing Red Balau boards in high-traffic commercial boardwalks where heavy-duty face-fastening is required for structural stability.
Pro tips for dense hardwoods
- Align the grain of the plug with the grain of the decking board before tapping it in to make the plug virtually invisible after finishing.
- Apply a small drop of exterior-grade waterproof wood glue to the sides of the plug to ensure it remains seated during seasonal wood expansion and contraction.
- Use a sharp wood chisel or a flush-cut saw to remove the excess plug material; avoid over-sanding the area, which can create 'shiny' spots on dense Red Balau.
- Always apply a UV-inhibiting hardwood oil to the plugs immediately after trimming and sanding to prevent them from drying out or graying prematurely.

Why Choose Plugs & Plug Kits?
How to Plug a Hardwood Deck
Countersink the Screw
Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.
Apply Exterior Adhesive
Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.
Seat the Plug
Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.
Flush-Cut After Curing
Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.
Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists
Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
