About this product

DeckWise Smooth Hardwood Plugs in Massaranduba are precision-cut wood fasteners designed to conceal face-screws in tropical hardwood decking and siding. These 3/8-inch plugs solve the aesthetic challenge of visible hardware by providing a color-matched, flush finish for high-end Massaranduba installations. They are specifically intended for contractors and DIYers who require a seamless, professional look on stairs, perimeter boards, and vertical surfaces.

Precision-cut from genuine kiln-dried Massaranduba hardwood for a natural color and density match.
Tapered design ensures a tight friction fit and a cleaner seal within the countersunk hole.
Specifically sized for compatibility with DeckWise Smart-Bit countersinking tools and standard 3/8-inch drill bits.
Bulk 350-count quantity typically covers between 100 to 175 square feet depending on joist spacing and board width.

Best used for

  • 1Concealing face-fasteners on Massaranduba perimeter boards and picture-frame borders where hidden clips are not applicable.
  • 2Finishing Massaranduba stair treads and riser installations to ensure a smooth surface free of snagging hardware.
  • 3Plugging countersunk holes on Massaranduba rainscreen siding or vertical fencing for a completely fastener-free architectural appearance.
  • 4Reinforcing repairs on Massaranduba boardwalks or docks where heavy-duty face-screwing is required for structural stability.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Align the grain of the plug with the grain of the decking board before tapping it in to make the fastener virtually invisible after sanding.
  • Apply a small drop of exterior-grade waterproof glue, such as Titebond III, to the side of the plug before insertion to prevent pop-outs during extreme temperature shifts.
  • Use a flush-cut saw or a sharp chisel to remove the excess plug height rather than sanding it down entirely; this prevents heat damage and 'burn marks' on the surrounding wood surface.
  • Ensure the plug is fully seated and the glue is cured before applying a UV-inhibiting hardwood oil finish to the entire deck.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
