About this product

The DeckWise Ipe Smooth Hardwood Plug kit is a professional-grade solution for concealing face-fastened screws in high-end tropical hardwood projects. These 3/8-inch tapered plugs are designed to be glued into countersunk holes, providing a seamless finish that protects fasteners from moisture while maintaining the unbroken aesthetic of the wood grain. This bulk 1750-count pack is specifically intended for large-scale residential decks, commercial boardwalks, and siding installations.

Made from genuine, kiln-dried Ipe hardwood to ensure a perfect color and density match.
Tapered design allows for easy initial insertion and a tight, wedge-fit seal.
Large 1750-count quantity provides coverage for approximately 500 square feet of decking based on standard fastening patterns.
Compatible with standard 3/8-inch countersink drill bits and the DeckWise Drill & Drive system.
Smooth-top face eliminates the need for orientation adjustment required by mushroom-style plugs.

Best used for

  • 1Concealing fasteners on the perimeter 'picture frame' boards and stair treads of Ipe decks where hidden fasteners are not applicable.
  • 2Finishing Ipe rainscreen siding installations to create a fastener-free architectural facade.
  • 3Securing Ipe boards on heavy-traffic commercial boardwalks or public docks where exposed screw heads may pose a snagging hazard.
  • 4High-end outdoor furniture construction using Ipe to hide internal joinery hardware and prevent corrosion from salt air exposure.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Align the grain of the plug with the grain of the decking board before tapping it home to make the plug nearly invisible after sanding.
  • Apply a small drop of waterproof exterior wood glue (such as Titebond III) to the side of the plug to ensure it remains seated during seasonal wood expansion and contraction.
  • Use a sharp flush-cut saw or a belt sander to remove excess material once the glue has dried, rather than trying to drive the plug perfectly flush with a hammer.
  • Apply a UV-protectant hardwood oil to the plugs immediately after sanding to prevent the end-grain of the plug from absorbing moisture or graying prematurely.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
