About this product
DeckWise Smooth Hardwood Plugs are precision-cut inserts made from genuine Ipe timber, designed to conceal face-driven screws in high-end tropical hardwood installations. These plugs solve the aesthetic challenge of visible fasteners by filling countersunk holes with matching wood grain, providing a seamless and high-end finish for professional decking and siding projects. They are specifically engineered for contractors and DIYers who prefer the traditional 'plug and screw' method for maximum board retention.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods
- Align the grain of the plug with the grain direction of the decking board before tapping it in to make the fastener location nearly invisible.
- Use a high-quality waterproof wood glue, such as Titebond III, on the sides of the plug to ensure it remains seated during the natural expansion and contraction of the hardwood.
- Allow the glue to cure fully before using a flush-cut saw or sharp chisel to trim the excess; follow with light sanding to level the surface with the board.
- Always apply a UV-inhibiting hardwood oil to the plugs after sanding to prevent them from weathering at a different rate than the surrounding timber.

Why Choose Plugs & Plug Kits?
How to Plug a Hardwood Deck
Countersink the Screw
Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.
Apply Exterior Adhesive
Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.
Seat the Plug
Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.
Flush-Cut After Curing
Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.
Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists
Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
