About this product

The DeckWise Master Plug Kit is a comprehensive fastening and finishing system designed specifically for face-fixing Ipe hardwood decking. It eliminates the visual distraction of screw heads by combining high-strength stainless steel fasteners with genuine Ipe wood plugs for a seamless, professional finish. This all-in-one solution is engineered for contractors and homeowners who require the structural integrity of face-screwing without compromising the aesthetic of a clean wood surface.

Complete system includes 1050 genuine Ipe tapered plugs and 1050 grade 305 stainless steel screws.
Features the DeckWise Drill & Drive tool for simultaneous pre-drilling and countersinking to consistent depths.
Provides enough components to cover approximately 300 to 350 square feet of decking based on standard joist spacing.
Tapered plug design ensures a tight friction fit that seals the screw hole against moisture and debris.
Includes T15 Star Drive screws to minimize cam-out and provide high torque transfer in dense hardwoods.

Best used for

  • 1Face-fastening Ipe deck boards on residential or commercial projects where a traditional, fastener-free appearance is desired.
  • 2Securing Ipe stair treads, railing caps, and benches where hidden fasteners or clips are not applicable.
  • 3Installing tropical hardwood siding or vertical cladding to ensure structural stability while maintaining a clean architectural look.
  • 4Marine applications such as boardwalks and docks where the durability of face-screwing is required alongside premium aesthetics.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Align the grain of the Ipe plug with the grain of the deck board before tapping it into place to make the fastener location nearly invisible after oiling.
  • Apply a small drop of glue to the side of the plug rather than the bottom of the hole to prevent hydraulic pressure from lifting the plug back out.
  • Use a sharp chisel or a flush-cut saw to remove the excess plug height, then sand the area with 80-grit sandpaper before applying a UV-inhibiting hardwood oil.
  • Always use the included Drill & Drive tool to ensure the countersink depth is deep enough for the plug to sit fully without bottoming out on the screw head.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8β€³ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4β€³ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
