About this product
The DeckWise Extreme Plug® Ribbed – Ipe is a high-volume fastener concealment solution designed specifically for premium Ipe hardwood installations. These plugs feature a specialized ribbed side profile that increases surface area for glue adhesion, preventing plugs from popping out due to the natural movement of dense tropical timber. It is the professional choice for achieving a clean, fastener-free aesthetic on large-scale decking, siding, and boardwalk projects.

- 3Finishing heavy-traffic commercial Ipe boardwalks or public seating where fastener protection is required for longevity.
- 4Detailing Ipe stair treads, handrails, and perimeter trim where hidden clips are not a viable fastening option.
Pro tips for dense hardwoods
- Apply a small amount of waterproof wood glue to the ribbed sides of the plug rather than the hole to minimize squeeze-out and ensure a total seal.
- Always align the grain of the Ipe plug with the grain of the decking board before tapping it home to ensure the fastener becomes virtually invisible after finishing.
- Wait for the glue to fully cure before using a sharp chisel or sander to flush-cut the plug, preventing the plug from 'pulling' or leaving a gap.
- Since Ipe is extremely dense, ensure your countersink hole is a consistent 3/8 inch depth to allow the ribbed plug to seat firmly without bottoming out prematurely.

Why Choose Plugs & Plug Kits?
How to Plug a Hardwood Deck
Countersink the Screw
Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.
Apply Exterior Adhesive
Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.
Seat the Plug
Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.
Flush-Cut After Curing
Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.
Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists
Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
