About this product

The DeckWise Extreme Plug® Ribbed in Ipe is a specialized wood fastening component designed to hide face-screws in hardwood decking and siding. It utilizes a unique ribbed design to create a high-friction mechanical bond, ensuring plugs remain securely seated even as dense tropical hardwoods undergo natural expansion and contraction. This product is intended for professionals and DIYers who require a clean, fastener-free aesthetic on Ipe surfaces.

Precision-cut from genuine kiln-dried Ipe hardwood for an exact color and density match.
Features a tapered, ribbed shank that provides superior mechanical grip compared to smooth-sided plugs.
Engineered to fit perfectly into 3/8 inch diameter holes for a flush, professional finish.
Designed specifically to withstand the extreme weather conditions and high-stress environments of tropical hardwood installations.

Best used for

  • 1Concealing face-screws on the perimeter boards and starter rows of Ipe decks where hidden fasteners are not applicable.
  • 2Installing Ipe stair treads and risers to achieve a seamless, furniture-grade finish without visible hardware.
  • 3Securing vertical Ipe cladding or rainscreen siding where face-fastening is required for structural integrity.
  • 4Hiding fasteners in Ipe railing systems, post wraps, and custom outdoor furniture to maintain a consistent wood-grain appearance.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Always align the wood grain of the plug with the grain of the deck board before tapping it in to make the fastener location virtually invisible.
  • Apply a small drop of high-quality exterior waterproof wood glue to the ribs of the plug to ensure a permanent, moisture-resistant seal.
  • Use a rubber mallet to seat the plugs slightly above the surface, then allow the glue to cure fully before sanding them flush to prevent glue smears on the surrounding timber.
  • After sanding flush, immediately apply a UV-inhibiting hardwood finish to the plugs to prevent them from graying at a different rate than the rest of the board.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
