About this product

The DeckWise Extreme Plug Ribbed Cumaru is a professional-grade wood plug kit designed to seamlessly conceal face-fastened screws in Cumaru hardwood decking and siding. These plugs solve the aesthetic problem of visible screw heads while providing a mechanical 'ribbed' grip that prevents the plug from loosening or popping out due to natural wood movement. It is specifically intended for contractors and high-end homeowners installing dense tropical hardwood surfaces where a fastener-free appearance is required.

Made from 100% genuine Cumaru hardwood for exact color and density matching.
Engineered with ribbed sides to increase surface area for glue bonding and friction fit.
Face-grain orientation ensures the plug blends naturally with the wood grain of the board.
350-count package provides coverage for approximately 100 square feet of decking based on standard fastening patterns.
Chamfered bottom design allows for easy insertion into pre-drilled 3/8 inch holes.

Best used for

  • 1Concealing face-screws on Cumaru deck boards where hidden fasteners cannot be used, such as perimeter boards or breaker boards.
  • 2Hiding fasteners in vertical Cumaru rainscreen siding or architectural cladding applications.
  • 3Finishing Cumaru stair treads and risers to ensure a smooth, splinter-free walking surface.
  • 4Plugging screw holes in Cumaru handrails and posts to maintain a high-end furniture-grade finish on outdoor structures.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Always use a high-quality waterproof wood glue, such as a polyurethane-based or exterior-grade PVA glue, to set the plugs in dense hardwoods.
  • Align the grain of the plug with the grain of the decking board before tapping it in to make the plug virtually invisible after sanding.
  • Wait for the glue to fully cure before using a sharp wood chisel or a flush-cut saw to remove the excess plug material to avoid tear-out.
  • Since Cumaru is extremely dense, ensure your countersink holes are drilled to a consistent depth of 1/4 inch to allow the plug to seat properly without bottoming out on the screw head.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
