Ipe (pronounced "ee-pay") is the benchmark against which every other decking hardwood is measured. This datasheet covers the species itself — its botany, physical and mechanical properties, durability ratings, sourcing and compliance status, and how it compares to the other tropical hardwoods we mill.

Ipe is not a single botanical species but a group of closely related Handroanthus species harvested and traded together. Moisture Behavior & Dimensional Stability

Every wood species moves as it exchanges moisture with the air, and how much it moves determines how a deck behaves through seasons. Ipe is among the most dimensionally stable hardwoods available:

The T/R ratio is the number installers should care about: it describes how evenly a board moves. A ratio near 1.0 means radial and tangential faces shrink at nearly the same rate, which translates to less cupping and twisting. Ipe's ~1.2 is exceptional — many domestic decking species run 1.6–2.0.

Equilibrium moisture content (EMC): Ipe's density slows moisture exchange dramatically. Where a softwood board can swing with a week of weather, Ipe responds over months, buffering it against short humidity spikes. Practical implications:

  • Acclimation is non-negotiable: Boards shipped from a warehouse climate need time on site — ideally stickered, shaded, and ventilated — before installation. Our acclimation calculator gives climate-specific guidance.
  • Gapping is climate-dependent: Dry-climate installs (installed at low moisture content) need smaller side gaps than humid-climate installs, because the board's future movement direction differs.
  • End sealing matters most: Moisture enters end grain an order of magnitude faster than face grain. Sealing fresh crosscuts with wax-based end sealer is the single cheapest way to prevent end checks.

Thermal Properties

Density drives thermal behavior. Ipe conducts and stores more heat than softwoods or hollow-core composites — which cuts both ways:

  • In sun: Ipe warms up, but unlike dark composites it doesn't approach the surface temperatures that plastic-based boards can reach, and it sheds heat quickly in shade or evening. Color matters more than material here; Ipe's medium-dark brown lands in the moderate range.
  • Structural behavior at temperature: Wood's stiffness is essentially unaffected across the outdoor temperature range. Composites soften measurably in high heat (which is why composite span ratings drop at temperature) and become brittle in deep cold. Ipe's span and fastener performance are the same in Phoenix in July and Minnesota in January.
  • Fire: The Class A flame-spread rating is a direct consequence of density — there is simply less oxygen pathway into the wood. No treatment involved, nothing to leach or wear off.

Durability & Resistance

  • Decay resistance: Rated in the highest durability class for natural rot resistance. Untreated Ipe heartwood routinely delivers 40–75+ years of service life outdoors.
  • Insect resistance: Naturally resistant to termites and marine borers — a key reason it's specified for docks and boardwalks.
  • Fire performance: Achieves a Class A flame spread rating — the same class as concrete and steel — without any chemical treatment. Relevant for WUI (wildland-urban interface) zones.
  • Slip and wear: Its density gives Ipe exceptional resistance to denting, scratching, and surface wear from furniture and pets.
  • Movement: Like all dense hardwoods, Ipe moves with moisture changes. Proper acclimation and side-gapping are essential; end-sealing cut ends prevents checking.

Workability & Fastening

  • Cutting/drilling: Ipe dulls standard blades quickly — carbide tooling is mandatory. All fastener holes must be pre-drilled.
  • Fastening: Stainless steel screws only; other metals can react and stain. Hidden fastener systems pair well with pregrooved boards.
  • Gluing: The wood's density and natural oils make adhesive bonding unreliable; mechanical fastening is standard practice.
  • Finish: Freshly milled Ipe is smooth and splinter-resistant. Left untreated, it weathers to an even silver-gray patina; a UV-blocking penetrating oil maintains the original brown tone.

Sourcing & Compliance

Ipe (Handroanthus spp.) is listed on CITES Appendix II, which regulates international trade to keep harvest sustainable — legal export now requires CITES permitting from the country of origin. All Ipe entering the U.S. is also subject to the Lacey Act, which requires documented legal harvest. We import through established, compliant supply chains with full documentation, and we mill and grade to industry standards consistent with NHLA practices. What this means practically for buyers: documentation and permitting have tightened supply. Quality and board-length availability vary more between suppliers than they used to, which is why sourcing from an importer with direct mill relationships matters more than ever.

From Forest to Your Jobsite: How Ipe Gets Here

Understanding the supply chain explains both Ipe's price and why supplier choice matters:

  1. 1HarvestIpe grows scattered through the canopy (often 1–2 harvestable trees per hectare), not in plantations. Legal harvest happens under government-approved forest management plans with per-tree documentation, now paired with CITES export permitting.
  2. 2Milling at originLogs are sawn and the lumber kiln- or air-dried in Brazil. Grading happens here: the clear, consistent boards are separated for export decking grades; the rest goes to lower grades and domestic markets.

Each stage adds cost, but the compliance stages are the ones that changed most in recent years — and they're why the gap between documented and undocumented material keeps widening. When a quote looks too good, the paperwork is usually what's missing.

Grading

Premium Ipe decking is sold as FAS/Select grade: clear face, minimal pinholes, consistent color, milled smooth on all four sides (S4S) with eased edges (E4E). Lower "rustic" or "#2" grades circulate at discount prices — expect color variance, pinholes, and more short boards. When comparing quotes, always confirm the grade and the length distribution being quoted; a low per-foot price on short random lengths is not the bargain it appears.

Aging & Maintenance

Do nothing

Ipe silvers to gray within 6–12 months of UV exposure. Structurally, nothing changes — the patina is purely cosmetic and many architects specify it deliberately.

Maintain the brown

Clean and apply a penetrating hardwood oil about once a year (more in high-UV climates).

Restore

Even decades-old gray Ipe sands back to fresh brown — the color runs through the full board thickness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ipe endangered?
No. Its CITES Appendix II listing is a trade-regulation measure to ensure sustainability, not an endangered-species designation (that would be Appendix I). Legally permitted Ipe remains available.
Why is Ipe more expensive than other hardwoods?
Slow growth, high density (higher freight cost per board), tightened export permitting, and demand from commercial and municipal projects that specify it for lifespan.
Does Ipe really last 75 years?
Untreated Ipe in ground-contact-free applications has documented multi-decade service in some of the harshest boardwalk environments in the country. Lifespan depends on installation quality, ventilation, and climate — 40+ years is a conservative expectation, 75+ is achievable.
Can I use Ipe near saltwater?
Yes — its marine-borer resistance is exactly why it's a dock and boardwalk staple.
Is Ipe a single species of tree?
No. "Ipe" in the lumber trade covers a group of closely related Handroanthus species harvested and traded together. The timber is nearly indistinguishable between them, which is why the trade treats Ipe as one product.
Does Ipe get hot in the sun?
In direct summer sun Ipe gets warm, but it typically remains cooler underfoot than dark composite boards, and it does not sag or creep at high temperature the way plastic-based products can.
How long should Ipe acclimate before installation?

Does Ipe move more than composite decking?
They move differently. Ipe moves with moisture (seasonal, gradual, manageable with correct gapping); composites move with temperature (daily, in every sun cycle, which is why composite gapping rules are stricter about end gaps). Neither is motionless — but Ipe's movement is the more predictable of the two once acclimated.
