About this product

The DeckWise Wood Plug Starter Kit is a professional-grade solution for concealing face-screws in high-end tropical hardwood installations. It provides species-matched, face-grain plugs that allow contractors and DIYers to achieve a seamless, fastener-free aesthetic on stairs, railings, and perimeter boards. This kit solves the problem of visible hardware in dense timber where hidden fastener clips cannot be applied.

Precision-tapered wood plugs designed for a tight friction fit in 3/8-inch countersink holes.
Face-grain orientation ensures the plug expands, contracts, and weathers at the same rate as the decking surface.
Specifically color-matched to exotic species including Ipe, Cumaru, Tigerwood, and Garapa.
Compatible with the DeckWise Drill & Drive system and other 3/8-inch countersinking bits.

Best used for

  • 1Concealing fasteners on the first and last boards of an Ipe deck where side-groove hidden fasteners are not applicable.
  • 2Securing vertical Tigerwood siding or cladding to maintain a monolithic wood appearance without visible screw heads.
  • 3Finishing Garapa or Massaranduba handrails and stair treads to ensure a smooth, splinter-free surface for residential or commercial use.
  • 4Performing localized repairs or board replacements on Cumaru boardwalks where existing fastener holes must be hidden to match the original installation.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • Always align the wood grain of the plug with the wood grain of the deck board before setting to make the plug virtually invisible.
  • When working with dense hardwoods like Ipe, allow the wood glue to cure fully before using a sharp chisel or flush-cut saw to remove the excess plug material.
  • Avoid using excessive glue; a small drop on the side of the plug is sufficient to prevent hydraulic back-pressure from pushing the plug out of the hole.

How to Plug a Hardwood Deck

1

Countersink the Screw

Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.

2

Apply Exterior Adhesive

Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.

3

Seat the Plug

Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.

4

Flush-Cut After Curing

Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
