About this product
DeckWise ThermoPlugs are 3/8-inch thermally modified wood plugs designed to conceal face-screwed fasteners in decking, siding, and trim. These plugs undergo a thermal modification process that increases their stability and resistance to decay, making them a durable solution for finishing high-end wood projects. They are ideal for contractors and homeowners seeking a clean, fastener-free aesthetic on vertical or horizontal wood surfaces.

- 2Achieving a fastener-free appearance on Tigerwood or Garapa vertical siding and rainscreen installations.
- 3Finishing handrails and post caps on Massaranduba or Red Balau railing systems to prevent snagging and moisture intrusion.
- 4Providing a decorative color-contrast plug option for high-traffic boardwalks and rooftop decks.
Pro tips for dense hardwoods
- When installing in dense tropical hardwoods like Ipe, always use a dedicated countersink bit to ensure the hole depth perfectly matches the plug height.
- Align the grain of the ThermoPlug with the grain of the deck board before tapping it in to make the plug virtually invisible after sanding.
- Apply a small amount of waterproof glue to the side of the plug rather than the bottom of the hole to prevent 'hydraulic bounce' and ensure a flush seat.
- Wait for the glue to fully cure before using a flush-cut saw or orbital sander to remove the excess plug material to avoid tearing the wood fibers.

Why Choose Plugs & Plug Kits?
How to Plug a Hardwood Deck
Countersink the Screw
Use a 3/8″ countersink bit to create a flat-bottomed hole roughly 1/4″ deep. The screw sits at the bottom; the plug fills the remaining space.
Apply Exterior Adhesive
Put a small bead of waterproof polyurethane glue (included in kits) into the hole. Too much glue squeezes out and creates a mess; too little and the plug loosens over time.
Seat the Plug
Tap the plug in with a rubber mallet or wood block until it seats against the glue. Ribbed plugs self-center and grip irregular holes; smooth plugs work best in precision-drilled holes.
Flush-Cut After Curing
Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully, then trim the plug flush with a sharp chisel or oscillating multi-tool. Sand lightly and apply finish.
Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists
Order plugs cut from the same species AND the same board lot as your decking for the closest color and grain match. Plugs from a different harvest can look noticeably different.
