About this product

The DeckWise Hardwood Plug Cutter is a professional-grade tool designed to create custom wood plugs from actual project offcuts. It solves the aesthetic challenge of mismatched grain or color often seen with pre-cut plugs by allowing installers to use the same timber batch as the decking boards. This tool is specifically engineered for contractors and high-end DIYers working with dense tropical hardwoods who require a seamless, face-fastened finish.

Available in 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch diameters to match industry-standard countersink bits.
Machined from high-carbon steel to maintain a sharp edge when cutting through high-density tropical species.
Produces slightly tapered plugs to ensure a tight, friction-fit seal within the countersunk hole.
Compatible with both handheld power drills and stationary drill presses for maximum job site flexibility.
Eliminates the need to buy pre-manufactured plugs, ensuring a 100% color and grain match with the installed boards.

Best used for

  • 1Face-fastening Ipe or Massaranduba deck boards where a completely hidden fastener look is desired using matching wood plugs.
  • 2Finishing picture-frame borders and stair treads on Cumaru or Garapa docks where structural face-screwing is required.
  • 3Installing Tigerwood or Red Balau vertical siding where the fasteners must be concealed to maintain a continuous wood grain aesthetic.
  • 4Concealing screw heads on rooftop deck installations where perimeter boards require mechanical face-fastening.

Pro tips for dense hardwoods

  • When cutting plugs from dense Ipe or Cumaru, use a drill press at a medium speed setting to prevent the wood from scorching or the bit from overheating.
  • Always align the grain direction of the plug with the grain of the decking board before tapping it into place to make the fastener location virtually invisible.
  • Use a small amount of waterproof wood glue on the sides of the plug and always leave the plug slightly proud of the surface for flush-trimming after the glue sets.
  • Regularly clear wood chips from the cutter during use to maintain precision and prevent heat build-up which can dull the cutting edge.
