How to Maintain Each Hardwood Species (Ipe, Cumaru, Garapa, Tigerwood)

Each tropical hardwood species has slightly different maintenance needs. This species-by-species guide covers Ipe, Cumaru, Garapa, and Tigerwood maintenance schedules.

Introduction

All tropical hardwood decking requires similar basic care, but each species has unique characteristics that affect maintenance frequency, product selection, and long-term appearance. This guide gives you species-specific guidance for the four most popular tropical hardwoods.

Ipe Maintenance

Ipe is the densest and most oil-rich of the major decking species, which gives it exceptional natural durability — but also means it absorbs finishing products less readily than other woods.

Key characteristics for maintenance:

  • Very high natural oil content — absorbs less deck oil than other species
  • Weathers to a consistent silver-gray patina if left unfinished
  • Surface checking is common and cosmetic only
  • Extremely resistant to rot, insects, and moisture damage

Maintenance schedule:

  • Annual cleaning in spring
  • Oil every 12 months (or every 6 months in coastal/high-sun environments)
  • Full refinishing (sanding) every 5–10+ years as needed

Product notes: Use oils specifically formulated for oily tropical hardwoods. Many standard deck sealers don't penetrate Ipe effectively.

Cumaru Maintenance

Cumaru shares many of Ipe's characteristics — high density, natural durability, and significant natural oil content.

Key characteristics:

  • Similar density and durability to Ipe
  • Warm honey-brown color that ages to light golden-gray unfinished
  • Slightly more oil-absorbent than Ipe

Maintenance schedule:

  • Annual cleaning and oiling
  • May absorb slightly more oil product than Ipe — two thin coats may be appropriate
  • Full refinishing every 5–10 years

Garapa Maintenance

Garapa is lighter in density and color than Ipe and Cumaru, with lower natural oil content.

Key characteristics:

  • Golden blonde color at installation
  • Lighter density means it absorbs finishing products more readily
  • Weathers to a golden-tan gray unfinished

Maintenance schedule:

  • Annual cleaning and oiling
  • Absorbs oil more readily — one good coat typically sufficient
  • May need more frequent oiling in sunny, dry climates
  • Check more carefully for early surface checking (lower oil content = more vulnerable when finish depletes)

Tigerwood Maintenance

Tigerwood is known for its dramatic striped grain pattern. Its density falls between Garapa and Ipe.

Key characteristics:

  • Distinctive orange-brown base with dark streaking that weathers and blends over time
  • Moderate natural oil content
  • Color variability is inherent to the species

Maintenance schedule:

  • Annual cleaning and oiling
  • The striped appearance mutes over time as the boards weather — this is normal and natural
  • Color differentiation between boards is most dramatic when new; blends with weathering

Universal Maintenance Principles

Regardless of species:

  1. Clean before oiling — always
  2. Allow the surface to dry completely before applying oil
  3. Apply thin, wipe off excess
  4. Use 316 stainless steel hardware in coastal environments
  5. Inspect structural framing annually — the framing determines the real lifespan

FAQ

Which tropical hardwood requires the least maintenance?

Ipe and Cumaru are the most maintenance-tolerant — their high natural oil content means they survive with less frequent oiling than lower-density species. However, all tropical hardwoods benefit from annual care.

Can I use the same oil product on all four species?

Yes — a quality hardwood deck oil formulated for tropical species will work on all four. Choose a penetrating oil, not a film-forming sealer.
