Hardened for dense woods

How to Face-Screw Hardwood Decking

1

Pre-Drill Every Hole

Dense hardwoods (1,500+ Janka) will split without a pilot hole. Use a countersink bit sized for your screw shank — this is non-negotiable for Ipe, Cumaru, and similar species.

2

Choose Stainless Steel

Carbon steel screws corrode and stain hardwood within months. Always use Type 305 or 316 stainless steel. The slight premium pays for itself in zero staining and no fastener failures.

3

Drive to Depth — Not Beyond

Set screws flush with the surface or just barely countersunk. Over-driving creates water-collecting craters that accelerate checking around each hole.

4

Two Screws Per Joist Crossing

Place one screw roughly 1″ from each board edge at every joist. This prevents cupping and ensures the board stays flat over time.

Pro Tip from Our Deck Specialists

Apply a drop of wax or soap to each screw tip before driving — it dramatically reduces friction and prevents snapped screw heads in ultra-dense wood like Ipe.
